Sitharaman targets Congress over IDBI Bank’s bad-loan legacy, defends strategic sale
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman defended IDBI Bank’s ₹52,878 crore strategic sale to Fairfax, highlighting its turnaround and countering opposition allegations over valuation norms.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday strongly defended the strategic sale of IDBI Bank, saying the Narendra Modi government had revived the struggling lender through professional management, prudent decision-making and over Rs 25,000 crore in recapitalisation, positioning it for its next phase of growth. In a post on ‘X’, Sitharaman alleged that loans extended to business groups with close links to Congress leaders, including Videocon, Winsome, ABG Shipyard and Kingfisher, turned into bad loans and caused massive losses for IDBI Bank.
