India paid nearly $29 billion more for crude oil imports in the first half of FY27 despite importing almost the same quantity as a year ago, underscoring how the sharp rise in global oil prices — rather than higher volumes — drove up the country’s energy bill. The crude import bill rose to $90.6 billion during April-September from $61.9 billion a year earlier, while import volumes increased by less than 1% to 122.7 million tonne, according to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC).
