In 2021–22, India exported 3.7 million tonnes of maize. Just three years later, exports had fallen to nearly half, despite a significant increase in production. The reason? A grain once primarily grown to feed poultry had increasingly found a new destination—as fuel. Maize now sits where energy security, farm income and import substitution meet, and planners increasingly describe it as an economy to be built rather than a crop to be grown.
