Sugar output may fall in 2026-27, no ethanol diversion: Industry
India's sugar production is expected to decline in the 2026–27 season due to deficient rainfall in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, prompting the government to consider restrictions on ethanol feedstock diversion to ensure adequate domestic supplies.

The country's net sugar production for the 2026-27 season (October-September) is likely to fall significantly from 31 million tonnes (MT) in the previous season, as deficient rainfall in parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka is expected to hit yields, industry sources said. “This time our gross and net sugar production would be the same as last season, as we would not be diverting any sugar for ethanol production,” Deepak Ballani, Director General, Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) told FE.
