The Supreme Court on Friday referred the $1.55-billion Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin gas dispute between Reliance Industries (RIL) and the Centre to mediation, appointing former apex court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai to help resolve the decade-old legal battle after direct settlement talks failed. The dispute centres on the government's compensation claim against Reliance and its partners, BP and Niko, for allegedly producing natural gas that migrated from adjoining blocks operated by state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) into Reliance's KG-D6 block in the Bay of Bengal.
