S&P Global flags potentially hidden AI debt at hyperscalers as AI spending surges
S&P Global warned that hyperscalers could be carrying more AI related debt than currently visible through financing structures linked to data centres and smaller AI firms. Despite rising concerns around AI infrastructure debt, the agency saw no immediate need for rating changes, while flagging profitability and escalating investment as key risks.

S&P Global warned that the world’s biggest technology companies could be carrying more AI linked liabilities than are currently visible, as the scale of spending on data centres and AI infrastructure continues to grow, according to a Reuters report. The warning came from Mark Habib, S&P Global’s Head for Digital Infrastructure, who said there was no need to change the agency’s ratings for now. However, he pointed to complex financing arrangements that could leave hyperscalers exposed to debt linked to data centre projects or smaller AI companies without those obligations being immediately visible on their balance sheets.US MarketsPowered ByAs on 20 Oct 2026, 12:02 AM ISTS&P 500 Top GainersDatadog262.40(6.19%)Amazon.com261.84(4.74%)Western Digital346.37(4.33%)Match Group44.81(4.32%)Gainers»S&P 500 Top LosersCoterra Energy32.56(-8.62%)Mosaic17.93(-4.73%)NRG Energy99.43(-4.16%)Eversource Energy64.26(-3.88%)Losers»For live updates on US Markets, click here “It is safe to assume that there is more (debt) out there that we are not seeing,” Habib said during a roundtable in London, according to Reuters.“If it's not reported, then it's not part of the disclosure by the hyperscalers.
