'Lockdown-like gridlock': Delhi traders urge Sonia Gandhi to reschedule Rahul Gandhi's November 1 rally

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has appealed to senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to defer the party’s proposed mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, citing the potential disruption to business during the peak Diwali shopping season. In a letter to Sonia Gandhi, the traders’ body warned that the rally could affect business worth Rs 10,000-12,000 crore across 20 major markets in the national capital. It said the gathering, expected to attract around 10 lakh people and 15,000-20,000 vehicles, could trigger massive traffic congestion and disrupt the movement of goods and shoppers in central Delhi. The CTI pointed out that the rally coincides with preparations for Dhanteras on November 6 and Diwali on November 8, making November 1 a particularly important day for traders and retailers. It urged the Congress to reschedule the event to a date after the festive period, warning that inadequate parking arrangements could bring traffic in the area to a standstill. CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal said the appeal should not be seen as opposition to the Congress rally but as a concern over the potential impact on traders' livelihoods during a crucial business period. He said the 20 markets collectively account for a daily turnover of Rs 10,000-12,000 crore and expressed concern that a lockdown-like traffic situation on October 31 and November 1 could prevent the transportation of goods needed for Dhanteras. Goyal stressed that the arrival of such a large number of people and vehicles in central Delhi could bring commercial activity across these markets to a halt at a time when businesses are counting on festive sales.
