Crude back at 2012 levels, rupee lifts OMC costs by 86%
India’s crude oil basket hits a nearly 15-year high, with a weaker rupee making crude 86% costlier for OMCs and causing steep marketing losses despite higher fuel prices and reduced excise duty.

India's crude oil basket has surged to a nearly 15-year high, returning to levels last seen in March 2012. But while international prices are almost identical, a sharply weaker rupee has made crude nearly 86% costlier for Indian oil marketing companies (OMCs), squeezing their earnings despite significantly higher petrol and diesel prices. With diesel marketing losses estimated at Rs 24 per litre during the September quarter, state-owned fuel retailers are facing mounting pressure on profitability.
