Car stolen, FIR delayed, claim rejected: Insurer ordered to pay man Rs 4.6L compensation
The insurer argued that the claimant breached policy terms by reporting the December 26 theft to police on December 29 and notifying the insurer on January 2, 2020, a seven-day delay.

A man whose insured car was stolen won Rs 4.68 lakh from an insurance company after the East Delhi Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held that a short delay in filing an FIR and informing the insurer could not justify rejecting his claim altogether. According to The Indian Express news report, the commission found the company’s complete denial of the claim to be a deficiency in service. The order, passed on September 25 by commission president Sukhvir Singh Malhotra and member Ravi Kumar, directs the insurer to pay Rs 4.31 lakh—the insured value amount—to the car owner, along with Rs 25,000 as compensation and Rs 12,500 towards litigation costs.
