The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) imposed a Rs 1 lakh penalty on a food company for advertising its bread as “100% Whole Wheat Bread” even though whole wheat flour made up only 62% of the finished product. The regulator also directed the company to immediately withdraw the misleading claim from print, electronic and social media, Indian Express reported. In its October 22 order, the CCPA held that the claim amounted to a misleading advertisement and unfair trade practice, and violated consumers’ right to accurate information about a product’s quality, quantity and composition.
