Home services marketplace Urban Company announced earlier this week that its board would meet on Friday, October 16, to consider raising funds through equity shares and/or equity-linked securities via a qualified institutional placement (QIP), preferential allotment or other permissible routes. The proposed fundraise comes at a time when competition in the instant home services space is intensifying, driven by the aggressive expansion of rivals such as Snabbit and Pronto. On August 2, Urban Company announced that its instant domestic help service, InstaHelp, had crossed 100,000 orders delivered in a single day. Snabbit, meanwhile, says its daily job volume has surged from around 400 to more than 1.15 lakh in less than two years.“Snabbit and Pronto currently operate with a clear mandate — and rightly so from their vantage point — to prioritize market-share expansion and differentiated category creation over near-term unit economics,” according to domestic brokerage firm JM Financial.Having raised $112 million and $60 million, respectively, according to Tracxn data, the two challengers have the institutional financial runway to aggressively subsidize customer acquisition and service-provider incentives. From Urban Company’s perspective, these well-capitalized entrants represent a significant structural threat to its long-term market dominance, JM Financial said.Well-funded competition necessitates a larger war chest Despite Urban Company already having a cash balance of around ₹20 billion at the end of FY26, JM Financial believes the company’s decision to explore a fundraise is strategically prudent. The brokerage said Urban Company could take cues from Eternal, which raised ₹85 billion through a qualified institutional placement (QIP) in November 2024 despite having a healthy balance sheet, thereby strengthening its ability to invest aggressively in Blinkit amid rising competition. Similarly, the brokerage believes a sizeable fundraise by Urban Company could serve a dual purpose: providing sufficient financial flexibility to accelerate investments as required while also potentially deterring incremental capital flows into smaller competitors. In JM Financial’s view, a well-capitalized market leader with the ability to sustain investments over an extended period could make it increasingly difficult for newer entrants to attract funding and challenge its market position. Near-term stock pressure likely The domestic brokerage house believes the proposed fundraise is positive from a long-term strategic perspective, but Urban Company’s stock could remain under pressure in the near term because of potential equity dilution and continued cash burn in InstaHelp. The competitive intensity could also keep customer acquisition costs and promotional investments elevated in InstaHelp, delaying the segment’s path to sustainable profitability. Nevertheless, it believes strengthening the balance sheet would not only enable Urban Company to respond to any potential escalation in competitive intensity but could also help deter private-market investors from funding its competitors. While potential equity dilution for existing investors could weigh on the stock in the near term, JM Financial believes the development would help Urban Company defend its market position over the long term. Accordingly, the brokerage maintained its Reduce rating on the stock, with a target price of ₹160 per share.Disclaimer: The views and recommendations made above are those of individual analysts or broking companies, and not of Mint.
